Football in the New Media Age

Football in the New Media Age

$46.95

Football/soccer in the new media age can often appear ubiquitous, dominating much of the mainstream news and current affairs agenda. The vast amounts of money paid to elite soccer players and the inability of young men to cope with this when combined with their media-fuelled celebrity status have frequently made headlines. However at the core of this process is the battle to control a game which has exploited its position as a key content provider for new media developments over the last decade. Based on extensive interviews with key players in the media and soccer industries, Football in the New Media Age analyzes the impact of media change on the soccer industry. It examines the finances of the game, the importance of rights and rights management in the industry and attempts by clubs themselves to develop their own media capacity. It also explores the key role played by soccer supporters. At the core of the book is an examination of the battle for control of the game as media, business and fans all seek to redefine the sport in the twenty first century.

 Out of the Pits

Out of the Pits

$29

From New York to Singapore, from Chicago to London, the trading floors of the world s financial markets are icons of global capitalism. Images of them are used on the news all the time traders burying their heads in their hands when the market is down, their arms flailing in a frenzy when fortunes are rising to convey the current state of the economy. But these marketplaces, and the cultural life that sustains them, are dissolving into the ether of the digital age: powerful financial institutions are shutting down the trading pits, replacing face-to-face exchanges with an electronic network where traders sit, face to screen, finger to mouse, and compete in a global arena made up of digits and charts. Out of the Pits considers the implications of this sea change for everyone involved, from the traders and brokers to the market as a whole. Caitlin Zaloom takes us down to the floor at the Chicago Board of Trade and into a digital dealing room in the City of London. Drawing on her own firsthand experiences as a clerk and a trader and on her unusual access to these key sites of global finance, she explainshow changes at the world s leading financial exchanges have transformed economic cultures and the craft of speculation; how people and places are responding to the digital transition; how traders are remaking themselves to compete in the contemporary marketplace; and how brokers, business managers, and software designers are collaborating to build new financial markets. A penetrating and richly detailed account of how cities, culture, and technology shape everyday life in the new global economy, Out of the Pits will be must reading forbusiness buffs or anyone who has ever wondered how financial markets work.

The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets: How to Keep Your Portfolio Up When the Market Is Down

The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets: How to Keep Your Portfolio Up When the Market Is Down

$19.95

The Little Book that helps investors avoid big losses in an economic downturn In the wake of falling stock and real estate prices, the American economy is poised for a decade-long bear market, so says Peter Schiff. After he accurately predicted the current market turmoil, savvy investors should pay attention–and start protecting their assets now, before the markets take their toll. The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets shows investors how to stay safe and stay liquid during economic downturns. Using economic history as a guide, Schiff looks at the bear markets that followed the bull markets of the 1920s and 1960s to predict what the American economy will look like after it corrects for the tech and real estate bubbles of the 1990s and early 2000s. Combining financial, economic, and political perspectives, Schiff looks at what worked in those earlier bear markets and predicts what strategies are most likely to work over the next ten years. In the end, Schiff argues that the next decade will most closely resemble the 1970s, complete with inflation, rising interest rates, and soaring commodity prices. This reversal of trends will make past investment strategies obsolete and pose a challenge for investors trying to build and protect their wealth. Smart investing will always pay off; the key lies in using the best strategies for the market at hand. For investors who see the writing on the wall but don’t know what to do about it, The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets offers a timely, critical answer. About The Author: Peter D. Schiff (Darien, CT) is President of Euro Pacific Capital, Inc., and one of the few non-biased investment advisors to have predicted the current bear market and positioned his clients accordingly. He appears twice a week on the FOX Business News network and has been quoted in such publications as the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, the Financial Times, and the New York Times.

The Public Prints: The Newspaper in Anglo-American Culture, 1665-1740

The Public Prints: The Newspaper in Anglo-American Culture, 1665-1740

$117.15

Newspapers reflect the world as perceived by its writers and readers. They illustrate assumptions in a society about the nature of news and history, the practice of certain literary styles, the political and commercial structure of communities, and the larger process by which culture is transmitted and transformed. Comprehensive in scope and narrative in style, The Public Prints is the first study of the role of the earliest newspapers in eighteenth-century American society and culture. In the hands of Charles E. Clark, American newspaper publishing becomes a branch of the English world of print in a story that begins in the bustling streets of late-seventeenth-century London and moves to the provincial towns of England and across the Atlantic. While Clark’s most detailed attention in America is to the three multi-newspaper towns of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, evidence from Williamsburg, Charleston, and Barbados also contributes to generalizations about the craft and business of eighteenth-century publishing. With the newspaper, Clark finds, English-speaking peoples on both sides of the Atlantic found an instrument of commerce, politics, literature, and an awareness of themselves and the world. By the middle of the eighteenth century, the newspaper occupied an accepted and essential niche in the social ecology of both Britain and British America. Stressing the continuous trans-Atlantic connections as well as English origins, Clark argues that the newspapers were a force both for anglicization in their attempts to replicate English culture in America and for Americanization in creating a fuller awareness of the British-American experience across colonialboundaries. Bybroadening access to current information and by dignifying in print the familiar concerns of everyday life, the newspapers offered a kind of open communion. Ordinary readers were invited into what was previously a privileged circle, sharing in the ritual of communal iden

The Rules of the Global Game

The Rules of the Global Game

$23.75

Economic news once confined to the business pages of the newspapers now receives headline coverage, whether it involves protests in Seattle or sweatshops in Asia. As attention is increasingly focused on economic policy, it becomes even more important for noneconomists to be able to make sense of these stories. Is the Asian economy sinking or rising? What effects will a single European currency have on the US economy? Kenneth W. Dam’s The Rules of the Global Game provides, in clear and practical language, a framework to help readers understand and answer such questions. Dam takes us beyond the headlines and inside the decision-making process as it is populated by lobbyists, special interest groups, trade associations, and public relations firms. While some economists and thinkers have idealized plans for US international economic policy, Dam, currently the deputy secretary of the treasury, manages to merge this idealism with a consideration of what it means to govern at the intersection of competing groups with competing claims. In The Rules of the Global Game, Dam first lays out what US international economic policies are and compares them to what they should be based on how they affect US per capita income. With this foundation in place, Dam then develops and applies principles for elucidating the major components of economic policy, such as foreign trade and investment, international monetary and financial systems, and current controversial issues, including intellectual property and immigration. Underlying his explanations is a belief in the importance of worldwide free trade and open markets as well as a crucial understanding of the political forces that shape decision making.Because economic policy is not created in a political vacuum, Dam argues, sound policymaking requires an understanding of statecraft -the creation and use of institutions that channel the efforts of interest groups and political forces in directions that encourage good economic outco
