does revenue of a company include All Assets? or only short term?
I’m confused. what does revenue include? does revenue=assets? or revenue=current assets? or is it more complex than that?
If you have $500 in the bank (asset), and $300 in loans (liability), your balance sheet (net worth) is $200.
So let’s say you earn $100 in income, but you have $25 in expenses and you had to borrow $50 on credit.
You earned $75 in revenue. That goes into your bank account. But really, because $50 was on credit (add’l liability), your actual net income was just $25.
So now you have $575 in the bank, but $350 in loans. Your new net worth is $225, a gain of only $25 since last year.
Businesses have to show net income on their taxes for income purposes, but they also have to provide a balance sheet. The balance sheet actually shows how much the company net worth changes year to year.
Generally, the net income you make is reflected on the balance sheet as a gain (or loss) in the company net worth. But it may not be income from sales. It could just as easily be net income because you fired someone and didn’t have to pay their salary and benefits as part of your operating expenses.
Clever accounting to twist all those numbers around and make it look like a company profited more than they really did is what keeps the big accounting firms in business.
